Working at Briarlea

Our Staff

In care, having the right staff is so important. We all know how a friendly face, or a kind word sets us up for a great day.  And how a frown can do the absolute opposite!

The difference our staff therefore make in the lives of residents can be massive. Sunny, bright personalities are a must. At Briarlea, we pride ourselves on our care team. They are some of the most experienced in the business.

Many have worked at Briarlea for over a decade. They really make Briarlea what it is today, and without them, we simply wouldn’t be Briarlea. If you move in, you’ll quickly get to know the team. We’re a friendly bunch. But in the meantime, you can meet just a few of our staff below…

Jo. Manager

Jo is our manager here at Briarlea. She’s been with us since the beginning. In fact, Jo was the first person that Briarlea’s owners – Mark and Sally – employed back in 2003.

Originally hired as the home’s cleaner, Jo has built on her experience through many roles at Briarlea. From cleaner to carer, then to deputy manager and now finally as manager of our home.

Jo’s worked every role, every shift – and has been there for every resident. When it comes to Briarlea, she knows her stuff. She takes pride in making our care home a wonderful place to live.

Her hard work is paying dividends. In our latest report, CQC comments how residents ‘were very positive about their life at the home, and the close bonds they had developed with each other and the staff who supported them’.

Jo ensures our residents get the best care in the industry. It’s for this reason that many of our staff attain qualifications in social care (called NVQs). You’ll notice this acronym cropping up a lot in the profiles below. Jo’s even become an NVQ assessor, which ensures our team’s care remains cutting edge.

When her carers are on training, she will often enrol on the same course… just to see if she can beat their marks!
Jo admits she’s a keen bean. But we’re grateful for the culture she leads at the home – where every resident can expect intelligent care giving, that’s empathetic to their needs.

Lisa. Carer

Lisa is our longest serving staff member. She’s been making a difference here at Briarlea since 1992.
In Lisa’s words, she came and never left. We love Lisa as she has a real calming influence on us all. In another life, we’re sure she would have been a yoga instructor.

Her level-headedness makes her perfect for her current role as Briarlea’s infection control coordinator – a job that she’s performed admirably throughout the pandemic.

Alongside her role, Lisa acts as our in-house hairdresser. Her mum, Val, pops in to help too. Now retired, Val was herself a carer at Briarlea. Her haircuts get booked up fast – she does a fantastic perm.

Danielle. Carer

In 2015, Danielle completed an apprenticeship with us. After the work experience, she left to explore roles in learning support. But she loved Briarlea so much that she decided to return. We were delighted to welcome her back.

Whilst she was away, Danielle banked some great knowledge on how people learn. It’s equipped her with the skills she now uses in her day-to-day care of residents, especially those who are living with dementia. Danielle has herself gone from strength to strength: and is now qualified in both her NVQ Level 2 and NVQ Level 3 in Social Care.

Nina. Deputy Manager

Nina is our deputy manager here at Briarlea. What’s more, she lives on site – so you can rest assured she will always be there to lend her experience if needed. And Nina is a very experienced carer. She’s been with us at Briarlea since 2005. In that time, she’s attained her NVQ Level 3 in Health & Social Care, as well as a ton of on-the-job training to boost the wellbeing of our residents.

On a given day, you can find Nina working on care plans or checking our residents’ medications.
It’s an understatement to say that our medication system simply wouldn’t function without Nina’s efforts.

Whether it’s ordering medicines, signing them into the building, or liaising with our pharmacy – Nina knows her stuff. She also covers Briarlea’s care rotas and oversees housekeeping. Nina keeps everything running smoothly.

Gemma. Carer

Gemma began working at Briarlea in 2005. In that time, she’s completed both her NVQ Level 2 and NVQ 3 awards. Recently she’s also been trained in how to dress and bandage wounds.

Gemma is a pleasure to be around; and greets each resident every morning with her trademark beaming smile.
Gemma is often found doing activities with the residents, like our weekly exercise class or sketching in the drawing room.

Sharon. Carer

Sharon only joined Briarlea in June last year. Previously having worked in admin, Sharon decided that she fancied a change of career. She wanted something more meaningful. But joining Briarlea midway through a pandemic, you might say it was a baptism by fire.

However, Sharon’s risen to the challenge admirably. She is now our expert coordinator for Briarlea’s weekly Covid-19 tests. What’s more she’s a dab hand at crafting care plans. Care plans are our most important piece of paperwork, as they lay out the personal care that each of our residents receive. They can only be made properly when a carer is in tune with a resident’s needs.

It’s this attention to detail which makes Sharon such a good carer. Why didn’t she join Briarlea sooner?

Rob. Handyman

Rob has been our handyman at Briarlea since 2011. He ensures the home is looking its best. On a given day he might be found pressure washing our patio, refreshing bedrooms with a new lick of paint, or tending to Briarlea’s grounds and gardens.

Once he gets Briarlea ship-shape, Rob always finds time to lark about with residents. He’s got a great sense of humour. While lean in stature, Rob even dressed up as Father Christmas last year to deliver presents to Briarlea’s residents. Helped by good deal of padding, he became the spit of St Nick! We’re hoping for a repeat visit this year.

And if we need some extra help, Rob will run breakfasts, clean and provide care too. He’s a man of many talents.
Rob is married to Jo and together they make a winning duo. It all adds to the family vibe we like to foster here at Briarlea.

Lisa. Carer

Lisa joined us in 2014. Before Briarlea, Lisa had never worked in a care home. But, true to form, she pulled up her sleeves and got stuck in, straight away. Since then, she’s blossomed as a carer. Lisa is now one of our most active members of staff. She cooks, she cares, and she also heads up Briarlea’s cookery club. She’s a real whizz in the kitchen.

Perhaps what Lisa is most well-known for at Briarlea are the beautiful, home-made cakes she bakes for each resident on their birthday. Each creation is uniquely iced and topped with whatever that resident desires. Fancy a cake made with zesty Lemons & Jelly Babies? Or Chocolate Aero & Malteser? No problem. There’s not a cake Lisa hasn’t mastered yet.

Ewa. Carer

Ewa joined Briarlea in 2013 and is our in-house night owl. If ever you need assistance after hours, Ewa will likely be the carer who’s up and eager to help.

Ewa’s biggest asset is surely her creativity. She’s a real artistic soul. At Briarlea, whenever we need a cloth embroidered or a garment sewn, we go straight to Ewa.

For this reason, Ewa can often be found guiding residents in cross stitch and their needle work.
She likes to keep everyone nimble fingered.

Lucy. Dog

Our staff page would be lacking if we didn’t reserve a word or two for Lucy. Lucy is our pooch in residence and a fundamental part of the care team. She loves spending time with people and adores the attention (and treats) that we all sneak her.

When she’s not having fun with residents, Lucy will be found in the Briarlea office – sitting in on all the management meetings, and staff appraisals. So, if it’s gossip that you’re after, she’s your go-to lady!

WHAT NEXT?

Most people fall in love with Briarlea straight away. But for some, Briarlea won’t be right for them. And that’s absolutely fine. It’s important that you pick a care home you’re happy with.

But if you’re after top quality care, friendly staff, cosy rooms and lots of laughs, why not pay us a visit. We’d love to show you what we have to offer. To arrange a visit, contact our dedicated care home manager, Jo.
